Our Peer Tutors

Ahmed Al-Mukhtar

Hey everyone! My name is Ahmed Al-Mukhtar. I am a second year Computer Engineering student. I tutor Math 1013, Math 1025, and Phys1800/1801. I am very excited to tutor you and make you feel welcome if this is your first year. An advice I can give you about studying is to make sure you don’t fall into the “I don’t need to practice this” trap. A lot of concepts may seem easy when you look at them, but you can only be truly sure that you know them if you practice several questions. If you’re having any problem with any concept no matter how simple it is, please drop in. It’s why I am there in the first place.

Courses: Math 1013/1025 and Phys 1XXX

Shrey Desai
Hello everyone! My name is Shrey Desai and I am a third year Biochemistry student. I have been in situations similar to all of you where I have had questions but no answers. I advise all of you to take advantage of SOS and peer tutoring as we are available every day of the week and we love helping as many students as we can. I am tutoring several chemistry, and math courses and also a physics course. I really enjoyed these courses in my first two years as they helped me create a foundation through which I was able to understand tougher concepts moving forward. A study tip I use often is simply to organize all the important points in a concept and connect them through diagrams or key words so that they become easier to comprehend. Hopefully, I get a chance to help as many of you as I can. Good luck to all of you and remember that the only way to get ahead in anything is to start now

Prakriti

Prakriti
My name is Prakriti (pronounced “pruh-cree-tee”) and I’m a 2nd year biochemistry major. I’m so excited to try and help out with MATH 1013/1014, CHEM 1000/1001 and BIOL 1000.  My advice is that studying should be cumulative (within reasonable limits). When you learn the next “step” (e.g. integration technique or class of chemical reactions), don’t forget the previous one(s). You need to learn how to put everything together in order to solve problems, so don’t completely isolate different concepts/strategies from one another. Oh and one more thing, never study on an empty stomach because your brain needs fuel.

Courses: BIOL 1000, CHEM 1000/1001/2020, MATH 1013/1014

Nader

Nader Allam

Hello! This is Nader Allam, a 3rd year Biophysics major. I will do my best to help with whatever question you may have in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology courses. I feel that when studying, the material may sometimes seem very tedious or otherwise very challenging which may easily lead to procrastination and frustration. It is at those instances that it is most important that one takes a step back to calm down and start reading between the lines and looking for what personally interests them in the subject. By relating the study material to their end goals and reminding themselves that all this is contributing to their personal success, what was once a mountain may become a simple speed bump, or even like an enjoyable roller coaster!
Courses: BIOL 1000/1001/2020/2040, MATH 1013/1014/1505/1025/1131, PHYS 1XXX, EECS 1541

armanArman Shojaei
Hi everyone, my name is Arman and I'm a 3rd year biomedical science major. I tutor first year chemistry and second year biology courses. When it comes to studying, the most important thing in my opinion is enjoying it. You tend to learn much better when you are interested in what you re studying. Courses: BIOL 2020/2021/2040, CHEM 1000/1001

Giovanni BurkeGiovanni

Hi, Im Giovanni, a 5th year Biomedical Science student and I will be tutoring: BIOL 1000/1001/2020/2021. My study tip is to have a bottom up approach - focus on the fundamentals and how they relate to construct a given system. Build your way to the over all "big picture." Nobody starts a puzzle by trying to figure out the final product all at once, but as a piece wise, step by step process. This will eliminate the need (for the most part) to memorize material, which isn’t the best way to absorb and retain information.

Hi! My name is Jenny Tang and I am in my second year as a Biomedical Science major. I am tutoring for BIOL 2020, BIOL 2040, BIOL 2060 and CHEM 2020 this year. I can also help anyone who needs help with BIOL 3110 and 3120 as well! I find that the best way to study hard concepts is to imagine that you are explaining the concept to someone who has little to no knowledge of the subject you are studying. This forces you to understand the concept fundamentally while allowing you to pinpoint your weaknesses in the topic. I look forward to helping you all. I promise that I won't bite, so please come!

ManpreetManpreet Kooner
Hi my name is Manpreet Kooner and I am a second year biomedical sciences major. One studying tip I would like to share is make sure to plan out study sessions over a few days. It's always hard to learn everything in one day and while it may seem tempting to leave everything till the last minute it is not a good idea to do so. You are more likely to do better if instead of cramming you spread the studying out.

Courses: CHEM 1000, MATH 1505

Bonnie Chan
Hello everyone, my name is Bonnie Chan and I’m in my second year majoring in Biology—and maybe switching into the iBSc program. I am a Peer Tutor for BIOL 2040 and I have two tips. One, learn to paraphrase concepts. If you can paraphrase, it shows that you understand the material vs. memorizing it. Second, do not be so hard on yourself. You must be thinking, “easier said than done”. For sure, I know this because it’s also something I’m working on. The point is, do not degrade yourself just because something hadn’t gone as planned. I’m sure you’re much more capable than that one instance of what you may have deemed “failure”. Keep going and remember to be nice to yourself!
