They will discuss such issues as past debates on the existence of extraterrestrial life, how scientists today are searching for signs of alien civilizations, and the views of theologians on the implications for religion if we do encounter other beings.
The Second X: Women in Contemporary Science
Science and Society & Bethune College Seminar Series: 2000 - 2001
How far have women come at the turn of the millennium in breaking down the barriers to their participation in the scientific enterprise? Women practitioners, feminist activists, and science studies scholars will grapple with this question throughout the academic year in a series of seminars. They will discuss such issues as the career trajectories of women in science, how women practice science, equity initiatives at different institutions, gender and the teaching of science, and how in the past women actively engaged in science fashioned a public image for themselves.
